There are a lot of great-looking restaurants in Sacramento, but when it comes to the perfect marriage of architecture and design, Zocalo ranks right near the top. This elegant Mexican hot spot sits in a lovingly restored 1920s auto showroom, with high ceilings and an extraordinary collection of Mexican artwork (even the TVs are beautifully framed). Good thing the food lives up to the décor. There’s a wide range of authentic Mexican dishes, from succulent carnitas to a 26-ingredient mole to assemble-your-own tacos de cazuela. The people-watching can’t be beat, and the desserts, like the flan or tres leches cake, can’t be missed.
