Mother Juliet & Her Romeo 

Aug 4-27 A century from now, Prohibition is back, Juliet is a retired showgirl (whose daughter wants to put her in a home) and Romeo is a bootlegger she meets during Mardi Gras. This afrofuturistic adaptation by Khimberly Marshall—artistic director of the local theater group The MacBeth Project—mixes Louisiana Hoodoo with classic Shakespeare at Sacramento’s Celebration Arts. celebrationarts.net

Into The Woods: California Trees From A–Z

Aug. 5 California boasts 6,500 species of native fauna, but we all know only certain bark-covered ones are ideal for hugging. Part of Sierra College Natural History Museum’s monthly, kid-focused Free Museum Days, “Into the Woods: California Trees from A-Z” puts the spotlight on our tall friends with activities like tree nut tasting, woodgrain stamp making and seed planting. sierracollege.edu

Rent 

Aug. 22–28 La vie bohème lives on. Broadway at Music Circus concludes its 2023 season with Jonathan Larson’s Rent. Chronicling the struggles of artists in ’90s New York City during the AIDS crisis, the Tony-winning musical marks the final Broadway Sacramento production headed by its longtime president and CEO Richard Lewis, who is retiring after more than 50 years with the organization. broadwaysacramento.com

Estampas De La Raza

Through Oct. 1 La Raza. It’s a term that means “the people” and celebrates the mixture of cultures that make up Hispanic heritage. This exhibit at the Crocker documents the intersection of the Latinx and American experience, bringing together 72 contemporary prints, including 11 from the Sacramento-based Royal Chicano Air Force collective. crockerart.org
