7 egg-cellent ways to celebrate Easter in Sacramento
Easter hops into our calendars early this year on April 1, bringing underwater egg hunts, adult egg hunts and other events to Sacramento as spring gets underway. Here are seven festive ways to celebrate the holiday.
Easter Egg Express
March 24-31 Hop aboard this Sacramento RiverTrain excursion for a two-and-a-half-hour adventure through Yolo County that departs from West Sacramento and makes a stop at Elkhorn Park, where the Easter Bunny will greet families and guide kids through an egg hunt for candy and toy prizes. Little ones can also go crayon crazy at a decorating station for egg-collecting bags, take part in a bunny hop contest and listen to a reading of the storybook How to Catch the Easter Bunny. $10-$45. Easter Eggstravaganza
March 31 Grown-ups at this annual Fair Oaks celebration featuring 20,000 hidden eggs can show off their searching skills in an adult hunt to win gift cards to establishments like Starbucks, Jamba Juice and Trader Joe’s. During their own hunt, kids can run after eggs filled with candy and toys that are scattered in the grass throughout Fair Oaks Park and seek out golden eggs to win large prizes like books and stuffed animals. Afterward, families can visit a carnival for photos with the Easter Bunny, go on a miniature train ride and meet baby animals at a petting zoo. Kids Easter Celebration
March 31 For over 10 years, Fair Oaks’ Sunrise Community Church has been hosting one of the biggest Easter bashes in the region, and this year will be no exception, with more than 800 people expected to attend. Kids can take part in three separate egg hunts, searching for almost 4,000 eggs filled with sweets and miniature toys. For those who want a bigger sugar rush, the Frenchy’s Waffles & Sandwiches food truck will be serving up treats like cotton candy and waffles covered in Nutella and fresh strawberries. Little ones can burn off the extra energy at bounce houses and visit a craft table with activities like making Peep kabobs, tinfoil Easter eggs and bunny masks. Spring Eggstravaganza
March 31 Egg hunts aren't just for kids. At this 24th annual Folsom event, the first 200 parents and grandparents to show up can participate in an adult search to win prizes including boozy chocolate bonbons and tickets to Palladio’s Luxe Cinema. Kids can get in on the action at a separate hunt by searching for over 25,000 plastic eggs, taking selfies with the Sacramento River Cats’ mascot Dinger, and partaking in a carnival featuring everything from ring toss and bounce houses to magic shows. Underwater Egg Hunt
March 31 Dive into the heated swimming pool at Fruitridge Community & Aquatic Center for this fifth annual underwater Easter egg hunt, where kids can bring their goggles, floaties and a basket or a mesh bag to hunt down the 200 plastic eggs that will be floating throughout the 25-yard pool. Spring Eggstravaganza
March 31-April 1 At this annual two-day fête at Fairytale Town, youngsters can make their own bunny ears at a spring-themed craft table and wear them to hunt for eggs by the Mother Goose Stage Lawn, Pooh Corner and King Arthur’s Castle. They can also hold paws with Peter Cottontail for a photo-opp, or hop over to the Children’s Theater for a performance of Bunny Boot Camp, a quirky comedy about Lieutenant Longears and his bunny battalion trying to deliver the last Easter eggs before the Big Bad Wolf devours them all. $10 ($7 in advance until March 30; Free for children 1 and under). 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Fairytale Town. 3901 Land Park Dr. 916-808-7462. fairytaletown.org
Easter River Cruises
April 1 Set sail for Hornblower's one-hour afternoon boat tour along the Sacramento River on Easter Sunday, during which cruisers can take in the beauty of the capital city. Along the way, the ship’s captain will narrate the journey with tidbits about sites the group passes, like the Delta King and the Riverbank Marina at the confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers, as guests on board visit with the Easter Bunny and munch on hot dogs and nachos. Adults can also sip cocktails like the Gold Rush, made with Hornitos tequila, St-Germain liqueur and grapefruit, or the Sac 75 with Tanqueray gin, sweet and sour, lemon and Wycliff champagne. $20. 12-3 p.m. Old Sacramento L Street Dock. 1206 Front St. 415-788-8866. hornblower.com
